Impact Assessment

We work with clients to highlight the key human rights and environmental concerns and propose measures for project management or operations that will eliminate or mitigate them. Our methodology is underpinned by the principles of a Human Rights approach. It can be tailored to specific requirements; large footprint infrastructure project, operating in weak governance zones or sourcing of a strategic material. Where appropriate we identify and work with local partners. Environmental issues are incorporated into projects where required and we have environmental assessment and management expertise within our team.

The following sets out our approach to human rights impact assessment. We work with clients to customise a work plan specific to their needs and questions.

Setting the Scope: This brings together a wide range of information in order to establish clear terms of reference for the assessment, including identifying relevant existing corporate policies, the scope of operational activities to be assessed, country and local conditions where the business operates and project or business life cycle stages / plans that might alter the impact profile.

Establishing the Baseline: This creates a detailed picture of the human rights and environmental challenges that the project presents. This includes: the legal and regulatory framework; other human rights or environmental obligations that apply in the project location; the local cultural context; and understanding local community values, the local economy and infrastructure, and local attitudes to the role of business and to the company.

Stakeholder Engagement:We use stakeholder engagement to confirm the understanding of the human rights and environmental challenges and explore possible approaches to eliminating or mitigating those challenges that will attract local support.

Assessing the impact: The potential material human rights and environmental impacts are clarified from the information gathered to date. This includes establishing the precise nature of the project’s impact and the alternatives available to the project to eliminate or otherwise respond to the human rights and environmental challenges. Also ensuring that the project's impact on vulnerable groups has been identified and appropriate actions identified.
